Kartington Speedway ~ First Race Day ~ May 27th, 2006
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race was in Mansfield this weekend, but we weren't interested. We had racing of our own to do, and we had waited a very long time to get back onto the track. Besides, it is those dang NASCAR trucks that put us way behind in getting our season underway at the Mansfield Motorsports Speedway. Not only that, but the NASCAR truck drivers weren't going to stop their race to come watch us in Kartington, so why should we stop ours to go see them?
Anyhow, about OUR race.....what a day! The #2 kart is back in action, and doing better than it ever did. We had all winter to make some major adjustments to the front end of the kart, and it seems to be holding it's place on the track quite well. The engine is being dialed in and tweaked, and Brandon is doing well at driving the kart around the track. Although it was the first time in nearly seven months that we got to go to the track to race, things didn't go bad at all. We placed second in the feature and Brandon took home $15 in prize money. There weren't enough karts registered in the open class to make the payout any better. But we had a blast, and the smell of racing fuel in the air was sooooo sweet!
Christopher is still getting his kart prepared for the 2006 season, and did not participate in any races this week.
2006 Season Update
For those of you who have been coming here looking for recent racing results for the 2006 kart racing season, I apologize for the lack of time to keep this site properly updated. I will do my best to try and keep the site updated with more current results as time allows. We have plenty of more races to run this year, and have some pictures that are going to be scanned from some of our races we have run so far this summer. Please check back soon for updates, and thank you for your patience!
We are racing this year at Mansfield as well as Kartington, but we haven't had much action to report so far. While we have gotten in a few good races, it seems that we have either been beaten out of racing frequently by mother nature or by our own string of technical problems. Most recently, our valuable 2-stroke engine that has taken Brandon and the #2 kart past the checkered flag in first place so many times finally choked up on us. It is currently being re-built and will be back on the track soon, ready to take home tall trophies.
In the meantime, Brandon has been forced back into driving a 5HP Briggs motor in the stock classes, instead of the open classes he has been racing all year up till now. Consequently, we have forfeited all of our cash prizes and trophies since the motor puked because Brandon and the kart fall way short of the required weight restrictions in a stock 350 class. Adding fifty pounds of weight would create a gearing and steering problem that we really didn't want to have to try and figure out. So we have been racing more for seat time and to tune up motors that we are wanting to sell. We are just looking forward to getting the legendary #2 kart put back together before the season ends, and screaming around the track again like it is supposed to be!
We were also greeted this summer with a two-month visit by Brandon's cousin Blake, who joined the team drove with us in several races. Blake had never driven a racing kart before coming to the team, but you certainly couldn't tell it to watch him from the very first heat he participated in. Okie also got to experience his share of frustrations over the summer as he was forced to sit back and watch a few of the races he was supposed to run in. At one point, he threw in the towel and decided he didn't want to race ever again......but it is racing, and once you've been on the track, you just gotta go back! Blake's short season ended even more abruptly than was even scheduled when Mother Nature decided to play a dirty little trick on us, and pissed on the track just enough to cause the officials to cancel his last feature race. Sorry about your luck on that one, Blake, but if it makes you feel any better, we got rained out again last week, and this week isn't looking too good either........so far.
Thanks for coming onto the team, Blake, and come back again. Your help and companionship were enjoyed and appreciated. We'll look forward to having you in the driver's seat again soon!
